A Smile??

I've made it my life's goal the past few weeks to get Jude to smile. Babies can start getting their smile on around this point in their lives, and ever since Jude's friend Thomas started smiling, I've been anxiously awaiting the day OUR little man follows suit. So all day long, I sing, tickle, pinch, rattle, bounce, dance, and basically make a fool out of myself trying to make him visibly happy. Ted sits down next to him on the couch a few days ago and announces Jude smiled at him. OK. Not that I would begrudge my sweet husband this honor, but COME ON! He hasn't put in the hours I have trying to make this happen, and frankly doesnt deserve the first smile in my opinion (yes, I'm a wicked wife). Seeing my mixture of excitement/jealousy/dismay, Ted said he wasn't 100% sure it was intentional and we sort of pretended it didnt happen. Then yesterday, during one of my frenzied sing/rattle/tickling episodes, he sort of half-smiled at the object I was holding, although not at me. I called Ted and left a long message about it, still unsure of its sincerity. Then this morning, Ted had Jude in his lap (seen above) and announced again that he was smiling. I was there, so I grabbed the camera. The smile is up for debate....it's not a huge smile, but it happened a few times in Ted's general direction, so we're claiming it today. There's a few pictures to help you decide for yourself, but his arms were raised in victory nevertheless.
We had a nice weekend too. Friday night we really wanted to see Dark Knight so we went to a drive-in theater on the other side of town to watch it. It was actually really fun, Ted and I have only been to one drive-in before, in Kentucky when we first started dating, and I think we'll be doing it more often now. This movie was actually over 2 hours long and we ended up having to bail a little early....Jude got fussy and wanted to be held the whole time, which would have been fine if it werent like, 85 degrees at 10pm that night. He's like a hot water bottle, and we kept passing him back and forth when one of us would get so sweaty we couldn't stand it. When he really started crying, we didnt want to bother the other people but rolling up the windows was out of the question, so we left early. New "Jude Rule" (or "Jude Law," haha): No movies after 9:00. We also got to go out by ourselves on Saturday night, while Jude's gramp babysat. We went downtown to my friend Emmalee's birthday party. It was up on the roof of her boyfriend's condos, and it was the most gorgeous night with the greatest view. We also learned about a "flabongo," something you'll have to Google to learn about yourself, but its pretty funny to watch! Sunday we went with some friends to Broad Ripple park and had lunch and enjoyed the sunshine. I hope everyone else had wonderful weekends too!

He is getting so big! I definitely think that counts as a smile. He will be doing it all the time before you know it.

What a good blog entry! I will be happy to confirm that that cute little smirk on the Judester's face does appear to be a smile! Thanks for the shout out and the flabongo feature...do I get any credit if it now becomes a world-wide phenomenon?

Oh my goodness that is a cute smile! You can see it in his eyes! And he's getting so big!!
BTW--we did indeed google the flabongo and have had fun thinking of people who need one...don't be surprised if you all get one wearing a santa hat some year...

I agree that it's a smile and am so impressed that you were able to capture it on camera! It took us weeks after she was actually smiling to get a picture of that elusive grin.

I love it. He's got a great smile.
